Grantee Dr. Omar Abdel-Wahab from MSKCC Elected to the Prestigious National Academy of Medicine

Omar Abdel-Wahab, MD, Chair of the Molecular Pharmacology Program at Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI); Evnin Family Chair in Molecular Pharmacology and Attending Physician on the Leukemia Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the most prestigious honors in the fields of health and medicine. NAM elects members each year who have demonstrated exceptional professional achievement and commitment within the National Academies. With Dr. Abdel-Wahab’s appointment, a total of 28 MSK faculty members have been conferred with this recognition.

At MSK, Dr. Abdel-Wahab leads The Omar Abdel-Wahab Lab where he and his team focus on understanding and targeting the somatic mutations driving hematologic malignancies. As a pioneering physician-scientist, Dr. Abdel-Wahab has made significant contributions to uncovering the genetic causes of blood cancers and translating these discoveries into therapeutic advances. His lab has provided key insights into BTK inhibitor resistance and the role of RNA splicing factor mutations in leukemogenesis which disrupt protein production and contribute to the development of cancer. Dr. Abdel-Wahab’s discoveries have led to the development of new therapies for treating blood cancers, including several drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as targeted drugs that are now in early-stage clinical trials. Some of Dr. Abdel-Wahab’s research has the potential to create new approaches for using immunotherapy to treat cancer as well.

Founded in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Medicine is one of three academies that comprise the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the United States. The National Academies are private, nonprofit institutions that work outside government to provide objective advice on matters of science, technology, and health. The NAM addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine, and related policy and fosters collective action to achieve common goals for health. Together, the Academies support education and research, recognize exceptional contributions to knowledge, and enhance public understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine (STEMM) fields. With their election, NAM members make a commitment to volunteer their service in National Academies activities.
